ASTM F109 Standard Terminology Relating to Surface Imperfections on Ceramics defines crazing as:
“The cracking that occurs in fired glazes or other ceramic coatings as a result of tensile stresses; some surfaces are intentionally crazed for aesthetic reasons; in these cases, crazing would not be considered an imperfection or defect.”
In some cases, crazing is considered intentional, intentionally created through mechanical process, making the crackle finish a hand-made feature. In the case that crazing is not intentional, it’s considered a surface imperfection.
Here is an example of crazing that has occurred. The manufacturer of this material provided disclaimer verbiage on the boxes that the crazing is intentional. Sample boards and loose samples may not show these imperfections, as they are not created the same way as a job site installation.
