Natural Stone Format Case Study

Different Sizes, Different Blocks - Architessa

This installation is beautiful and a great opportunity to discuss why the patterns look so different, despite being the same stone.  Notice the difference in the amount of gray veining and movement from the 12x12 field tile (above) and the 12x24 field tile (below). These are both Bianco Venatino marble.

It is important to understand that stone is variable, and different sizes of stone are cut from different blocks of stone. The largest tiles are the most important as they cover the most surface, so they take the most beautiful blocks. Smaller tiles are typically cut from the less desirable blocks that were not viable for larger tiles.  Natural stone is one of the most timeless materials on earth, but it must be embraced that each tile is unique from the rest, which is why a dry-lay is always recommended, whether you are mixing sizes or not.
